The drink that once stood for a certain kind of night out is getting a second look. This time, we’re paying attention to what’s in the glass.

There was a time when ordering a Cosmopolitan felt less like choosing a drink and more like announcing a version of yourself. You had plans. You had somewhere to be after those plans. You owned at least one going-out top whose primary purpose was to be seen while sitting down.

You knew the glass: a sharp V, a flash of pink, the promise that the night might become a story. The Cosmo was a cocktail and a cultural prop, which is an almost impossible job for four ingredients to do forever.

The Cosmo got stuck in a moment in time. Maybe when enough time passes: we stop asking whether a drink is cool and remember to ask whether it’s good.

The drink existed before the TV show

The Cosmo’s origin story is the kind people still debate over a second round. Versions of a pink vodka cocktail circulated before it became a New York calling card. Cheryl Cook, Toby Cecchini and Dale DeGroff all figure into accounts of the modern drink. Cecchini’s late-1980s version at The Odeon helped establish the vodka, cranberry, orange liqueur and lime combination many people recognize; DeGroff helped carry it into a wider cocktail world.

Then came the late ’90s. Sex and the City made the Cosmo an accessory to friendship, dating, getting dressed and going out. The characters could be having an extremely complicated conversation, but at least the drink order was settled. It became so recognizable that eventually people judged the glass before tasting what was in it.

To be fair, some Cosmos deserved the skepticism. Too much sweet cranberry mix can flatten everything; too little fresh lime leaves the drink without a point of view. But the actual idea is good: tart cranberry, bright lime, orange and vodka, shaken very cold. It’s vivid and refreshing when those ingredients are in balance. The color is simply a bonus.

She’s back, baby.

Our nostalgia has rose colored glasses. We don’t necessarily want the whole early-2000s experience back. We can appreciate the little rituals—the group chat deciding where to meet, getting ready with a friend, ordering the drink you know you like.

The Cosmo belongs to that category. It’s recognizable without requiring an explanation. It can be glamorous without demanding that you take it very seriously. And unlike a lot of things we remember fondly, it can actually improve when you revisit it with better ingredients and a little more attention.

Enter the Rodeo Queen

Weber Ranch’s Cosmo is called the Rodeo Queen Martini, which sounds like someone who would make a plan, send the location to the group chat and somehow arrive looking entirely unhurried.

It has the Cosmo’s familiar cranberry, orange and lime. What changes is the vodka: Weber Ranch begins with 100% Blue Weber Agave. Its subtle fruit and citrus notes, silky mouthfeel and clean finish give us a reason to notice the base spirit, even in a drink with this much personality. The Rodeo Queen Martini keeps the pink-glass nostalgia and gives it a distinctly Weber Ranch pour.

Make the Rodeo Queen Martini

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Weber Ranch Vodka
  • 1 oz cranberry juice
  • ¾ oz triple sec
  • ½ oz lime juice
  • Lime twist, for garnish

Method

  1. Combine everything except the garnish in a shaker filled with fresh ice.
  2. Shake vigorously until well chilled.
  3. Strain into a chilled martini glass.
  4. Garnish with a lime twist.

Use fresh lime if you can, and chill the glass before you start. Cranberry juices vary in sweetness, so make the recipe once as written before deciding how you like your balance. The point isn’t to make the drink complicated. It’s to give its four ingredients a fair chance.

Maybe you once ordered Cosmos without a second thought. Maybe you’ve only ever known them as a reference. Either way, pour a Rodeo Queen Martini and see how you feel about the drink now. Some comebacks are less about becoming a new person than admitting you liked the old one all along.
